Message from the Principal

Dear Students, Staff, Partners, and Friends,

The first half of the year has been marked by significant progress in our commitment to producing competent, compassionate, and ethical healthcare professionals. Through the dedication of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners, we have continued to strengthen academic excellence, expand community outreach, and improve the quality of clinical education.

As we reflect on these achievements, we also look forward with confidence to new opportunities that will further strengthen our institution and contribute to improved healthcare delivery in the communities we serve.

Academic Highlights

The Institute successfully conducted teaching and learning activities across all academic programmes during the first semester. Key achievements included:

1. Smooth and timely commencement of Semester One classes across all programmes.

2. Orientation and warm welcome of 55 newly admitted students — 35 midwifery and 20 nursing students — into the PHSI family.

3. Timely administration of continuous assessments and practical examinations.

4. Strengthened clinical placements, including the revision and renewal of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with affiliated hospitals and health facilities.

5. Faculty development sessions to enhance teaching and assessment methods.

Student Activities

Our students continued to demonstrate leadership, professionalism, and a heart for service through health awareness campaigns, community health outreach programmes, and student leadership meetings, including the election of new student leaders. These activities gave students valuable opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in real settings while serving the community.

Clinical Training

Clinical education remains the cornerstone of our programmes. Throughout the semester, students gained supervised, hands-on experience in patient assessment, nursing and midwifery care, laboratory procedures, pharmacy practice, infection prevention and control, and professional ethics. The Institute sincerely appreciates all clinical supervisors and partner facilities for their continued mentorship of our students.

Community Outreach

True to its mission of service, PHSI continued reaching out to surrounding communities through health education, maternal and child health awareness, disease prevention, nutrition education, hygiene and sanitation promotion, and basic health screening services. These initiatives strengthened the Institute's relationship with the community while enriching students' practical learning experiences.

Research and Innovation

Faculty members and students participated in research activities aimed at improving healthcare delivery, focusing on public health, maternal and child health, infectious diseases, and quality improvement in healthcare services. The Institute continues to champion evidence-based practice and to promote research as an essential component of health sciences education.

Staff Development

To keep teaching relevant, innovative, and student-centred, staff members took part in professional development workshops, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities, curriculum review meetings, educational seminars, and clinical skills enhancement training.

Partnerships

The Institute continued to strengthen collaboration with government ministries, hospitals and health facilities, professional councils, faith-based organizations, development partners, and local and international educational institutions. These partnerships underpin the quality of our education, clinical training, research, and community service.

Student Achievements

We proudly celebrate students who distinguished themselves this semester through academic excellence, election to the new student leadership, community service, exemplary professional conduct, and innovation during practical training. Congratulations to all our students for their dedication and hard work!

Infrastructure and Institutional Development

The Institute continued investing in its learning environment through the improvement of classrooms, enhanced ICT services (including unlimited student access to the internet), provision of learning materials such as textbooks and stationery, and ongoing maintenance of student learning spaces.

Looking Ahead: Second Semester Plans

In the second semester, the Institute plans to expand research activities, strengthen simulation-based learning, increase community outreach programmes, enhance digital learning systems, continue curriculum improvement, and deepen partnerships for clinical education and research.

Appreciation

The Presbyterian Health Science Institute extends sincere gratitude to our students, faculty, and staff; our partner hospitals and health facilities — Juba Teaching and Referral Hospital (JTRH), Juba Military Hospital (JMH), Munuki PHCC, Nyakuron PHCC, and Malakia PHCC; government agencies, particularly the Ministry of Health, Republic of South Sudan; development partners, especially Mission 21; the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan (PCOSS); and all parents and guardians.
