Community Peacebuilding & Social Cohesion Initiative — Maiwut County

PRDA South Sudan implemented a community peacebuilding and social cohesion initiative in Maiwut County to strengthen peaceful coexistence and promote dialogue among communities affected by conflict, displacement, and recurring local disputes. The project brought together teachers, parents, traditional chiefs, elders, women, youth representatives, and other community leaders to foster mutual understanding, rebuild trust, and develop locally driven solutions to address the root causes of conflict. By creating inclusive platforms for dialogue, the initiative encouraged communities to work collectively towards lasting peace and stability.

A series of peace dialogue forums, community consultations, and conflict resolution workshops were organized across targeted communities, providing participants with opportunities to openly discuss issues affecting social harmony, including disputes over natural resources, inter-community tensions, youth involvement in violence, and the impact of prolonged insecurity on education and livelihoods. Traditional chiefs and respected elders played a leading role in facilitating discussions, drawing upon customary conflict resolution mechanisms while promoting reconciliation and forgiveness among conflicting groups.

Recognizing the important role of education in peacebuilding, teachers and parents were actively engaged in promoting a culture of peace within schools and communities. Teachers received guidance on integrating peace education, tolerance, and non-violent conflict resolution into everyday learning activities, while parents were encouraged to reinforce these values at home. The project emphasized the importance of schools as safe spaces where children can learn the principles of respect, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence regardless of their ethnic or social background.

The initiative also strengthened collaboration between community leaders, local authorities, and civil society actors by establishing community peace committees responsible for monitoring emerging tensions, facilitating dialogue, and promoting early conflict resolution before disputes could escalate. These committees helped improve communication between different community groups and encouraged inclusive participation in local decision-making processes.

Through active participation by teachers, parents, elders, traditional chiefs, women, and youth, the project contributed to rebuilding social cohesion and strengthening community resilience. Participants reported improved relationships among neighboring communities, greater willingness to resolve disagreements through dialogue rather than violence, and increased community ownership of local peacebuilding efforts. The project demonstrated that sustainable peace is achieved through inclusive participation, community leadership, and continuous dialogue, laying a stronger foundation for stability, education, and long-term development in Maiwut County.
